This recipe takes Baby Oatmeal Cereal to a whole new level. Your toddler will love this fresh, yummy, and healthy combination. The addition of fresh yogurt and homemade apple sauce to the oatmeal enhances the flavor of the meal and its nutritional value. Besides, it becomes more filling. Another plus for this recipe is that after you make the apple sauce, you can safely store it in the fridge for several days. All you need to do thereafter is warm it up when preparing your baby’s meal. This recipe is definitely a much better alternative to store-bought breakfast pouches. My toddler loves this for breakfast. Also, he occasionally has it as a late afternoon snack.

Tips on Substituting Ingredients for Baby Oatmeal
- You could substitute yogurt with milk if you have to. The sweet and sour taste will still be achieved through the apple sauce, but the consistency will be different. So, adjust milk measurements to meet your desired consistency.
- I prefer Gala apples for this recipe because of their sweet and very mildly tangy flavor. They also mush well when cooked, hence perfect for making apple sauce. You can use any other apples that share these characteristics, but I’d say stay away from the boldly tart apples like Granny Smith which could force you to add sugar to the mix.
- I use the Gerber brand of oatmeal cereal because my toddler loves it. I believe other brands of baby oatmeal cereal would work just as well too. NOTE: This recipe may not work with regular oats (rolled, steel cut, etc.) and I do not recommend that you try it.
Additional Instructions on Preparing Baby Oatmeal
- As always recommended, prepare baby food in a clean environment using clean utensils to minimize chances of contamination.
- ‘One part each’ in the recipe means that if you are scooping 2 tbsp of apple sauce, for instance, then scoop 2 tbsp of yogurt and 2 tbsp of oatmeal cereal as well. They should all be equal parts.
- Check the consistency of the mixture in comparison to what your toddler usually prefers and adjust accordingly. The thickness of your apple sauce or the yogurt you’ll use may be different. Therefore, the measurements in the recipe above may not work well for you. If your mixture comes out too light, you can add a little more oatmeal cereal. If it is too thick, add a little yogurt and a little apple sauce (in equal parts) until you achieve your desired consistency.
- You can choose to prepare more or less apple sauce at a time depending on the consumption rate in your household. I recommend making smaller amounts at a time (at most 4 apples = 4 servings) to ensure freshness.
- Store the remaining apple sauce in a clean and sterilized container and refrigerate as soon as it fully cools down.
- Find additional tips below on how to handle leftover food.
Tips on Handling Leftover Food
- Discard any leftover meal (oatmeal-apple sauce-yogurt combination). This mixture should only be made as a single serving for immediate feeding. Otherwise, store the oatmeal, the apple sauce, and the yogurt separately in their own containers and only combine them when ready to feed your baby.
- Since both apple sauce and yogurt will be coming out of the fridge, consider warming the food before feeding the baby. If microwaving, be careful not to overheat or the food will be unusable. Both texture and taste will be destroyed.
- The apple sauce you make is good for up to four days if well refrigerated. I discard any leftovers after 4 days. Store it in an airtight container.
- If using the Stonyfield brand of yogurt, you can safely store the remaining amount in the fridge if you don’t use an entire can in one serving. Just make sure to scoop with a clean spoon so that the remaining amount is not contaminated. Store the remainder in an airtight container, such as by placing the yogurt can in a sandwich ziplock and sealing it before placing it in the fridge.
