This was my go-to breakfast, mid-morning, or afternoon snack when I was a graduate student a few years ago. I would take my yogurt, granola, and berries mix to school and I’d be munching on it quietly as I worked on the never-ending grad school papers. I loved this combination for its yumminess but more importantly, it was filling. Just what I needed then as there wasn’t much time to spare. If you find yourself needing something like this too, then you’re in luck because here’s how to do it.

With just three ingredients and two steps, you’ll have this nutritious bowl ready to go. But first, let’s go over the types of yogurts, granola, and berries that are the best for creating this marvelous bowl.

Greek yogurt vs other yogurts

You may wonder why Greek yogurt is so popular. Well, it boasts more protein and less sugar compared to the other yogurts. Besides, its thick and creamy consistency makes it perfect for combinations such as with berries, granola, oats, or chia seeds. That being said, the other types of yogurts are also nutritious and can be used in place of Greek yogurt if the latter is not accessible. All well-made dairy yogurts are rich in calcium, protein, and probiotics which support digestion and overall heart health.

Choosing the best granola

You can use store-bought granola, or you can bake your own at home. There is a wide variety of granola sold in grocery stores, from sugar-free options to organic options, and the regular granola that is quite sweet. You can choose from granola flavors with nuts, coconut flakes, chocolate, peanut butter, cinnamon, honey, and much more.

I mostly buy mine from Meijer and I love Nature Valley’s French Vanilla flavor and KIND Healthy GrainsAlmond Butter Clusters among other flavors from the same brands. Overall, I love granola which is crunchy but also crumbly and easy to chew.

Which berries should you add to yogurt and granola?

Always go for fresh berries as opposed to frozen ones for this recipe. Fresh berries hold their shapes, have a firm texture, and are bursting with fresh flavors. Frozen berries, on the other hand, become mushy when they thaw, losing that needed texture. Also, frozen berries are less flavorful because much of their juice leaks out in the thawing process.

I love to use blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries in this recipe. However, you can use any berries available to you. I have also seen people add pomegranate in place of berries to their yogurt and granola combination. There’s another healthy alternative!

Should you add berries or fruit to yogurt and granola?

Both do a wonderful job. In this recipe, I used berries only but feel free to throw in some fruit as well. Fresh, ripe mango cubes and banana slices are my preferred fruits. I believe many others can do a great job too. I sometimes mix berries and fruits and other times, I go for fruits only or berries only. You can basically work with whatever is available to you to create this meal, with no pressure to mix different types of berries or fruits. It will still taste great.

Should you mix yogurt and granola right away?

No. Not if you are planning to have the meal later. Mix yogurt and granola only when you are ready to eat so that the granola does not soak in the yogurt, lose the crunch, and become soggy. If you want to take the meal with you, say to work, pack each item separately, or mix yogurt with the berries and keep the granola separate. Utilize those tiny Tupperware containers for berries and granola and get a bigger one for yogurt so you have room left to later pour in the toppings.
